To be able to transform someone from Plain Jane to confident, Rockin’ Roxie is incredibly satisfying. The creative aspect of what I do is always changing and always rewarding. To create a unique, individual style for a client makes my day. And, to top it all off, I get paid for this!

I have been a hair stylist since 1985. I am also a national team member with the Retrohair company. In this capacity I travel the country teaching cutting and coloring techniques and motivating and encouraging stylists in their craft. I also do stage work for trade shows.

What I do is more than just hair for me. Every day I'm behind the chair I have the opportunity to speak to people and learn about their lives… a chance to bolster their confidence, soothe their worries and alleviate some of their stress.

MORE

I have extensive training in the technical aspects of color and presented at the International Hair Exchange in Dallas, Texas, in 1998. I have completed and continually review David Velasco's series, Trade Secrets of a Haircolorist. I am an accomplished dry-cutter and continually receive rave reviews on my cutting classes.

One of my biggest challenges? Being able to correct bad hair color. I have had so many people come to me desperate to do something with a hair color that did not turn out as expected.

It is important for people who want to get into the hair styling business to remember it is not just a “job”, it is a career. Although it is not always hard work, it does require continuing education and an understanding that your personal presentation and customer service are as important as your technical skills. I have found the key to success in this business is standing out, not fitting in.

I am passionate about professionalism within my industry. Collectively, hairdressers need to raise the bar and expect more from their co-stylists. My guiding mantra is: ‘A man that works with his hands is a tradesman, a man that works with his hands and his head is a craftsman, a man that works with his hands, his head and his heart is an artist.' I strive to elevate this profession to what it once was, a highly revered art form.

And I cannot wait to advise you on how to become a hairstylist and/or the ins and outs of opening your own salon!
