I work for myself as a private academic tutor. I have the business moniker, Strength in Numbers, to increase my professionalism and to provide for the times when I do need to subcontract out work, but largely I do all the tutoring myself.
I specialize in math, physics and chemistry tutoring. I have helped students ace courses from elementary algebra to advanced placement calculus and AP physics. I have a personalized approach to each student which ensures they will come away from each session with a deeper understanding of math and science and the confidence to do well in their course.
Here’s just a bit of what we can cover in our PivotPlanet session(s):
• How to promote yourself as a tutor.
• How to set prices.
• How to handle your profit margin – i.e. make sure your commute doesn't eat all your earnings.
• How to identify a niche market for your tutoring.
• Understanding the psychology of your targeted clientele.
I know what types of promotions work and what types do not. I know who you should be working with, what sectors of the population want to work with a private tutor and how to structure your prices so you make sure you can do well.
My job allows me to teach in a one-on-one environment that avoids all the red tape of formal schooling. I get to work at a customized pace and don't have to worry about the social dynamics of a large class interfering with my students' learning.
I began tutoring college calculus while studying at UMass Lowell and loved it. Immediately after graduation, I began doing business under the name Strength in Numbers in 2008. Since then I have become one of the premier providers of math and science tutoring in Greater Boston.
I offer subject tutoring for all math and science courses including homework help, conceptual assistance and organizational skills. Subject tutoring has always been my “bread and butter”. However, I also provide independent learning from the ground up for those wanting to learn an advanced topic but are not enrolled in a formal course; and offer test preparation for most standardized tests, including SSAT, ISEE, PSAT, SAT, ACT and GRE.
I'm proud of the feeling I get when a student's eyes light up with understanding. That makes my job very rewarding. It's also very nice to be able to earn a living income without an enormous time commitment.
